COURSE OBJECTIVES:
This three-day course is designed for licensed professionals in equine health care to become familiar with the application of taping for specific use in therapeutic and clinical rehabilitation.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After completing this course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss and apply
- tape to relax overuse syndromes, stimulate weaker muscles and decrease pain and swelling
- Identify areas that will benefit from the application of tape
- Incorporate the use of the tape into the participant’s existing practice
- Design an individualized taping protocol for different clinical conditions
- Communicate reasons for application of the tape with the veterinarian and owner responsible for the horse
- Evaluate the overall progress of the horse in response to taping sessions
COURSE ACTIVITIES AND PRESENTATION:
Students are provided with the course material on the first day of the course. The instructor will lecture to prepare the student for the practical exercises and subject matter using PowerPoint presentations of illustrations or diagrams. Practical exercises will be done by the student in pairs and on the horse directly following the lectures to incorporate the techniques discussed.

GUIDED EXTERNSHIP (FINAL PROJECT) AFTER COURSE:
For this particular course there are 40 hours of guided study once the student leaves the class. Although this is not a required externship you will have the opportunity to participate should you choose to do so (the externship is a requirement for those seeking Equinology’s Certification in Equine Taping).
PREREQUISITES:
Participants must belong to one of the professions listed below. Individuals not included in this list must first be approved by EquiLearn after a review of their credentials and academic qualifications.
Participants must hold a recognized qualification in the field of equine healthcare. They must understand functional anatomy with regard to the musculoskeletal system and be able to palpate and identify surface anatomy. Participants must have confident horse handling skills, understand equine behavior and be comfortable working around different equine personalities and dispositions. Participants must have worked professionally and full-time with horses for at least 2 years.
ELIGIBILITY FOR COURSE ATTENDANCE:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine:
Proof of degree must be provided upon registration. In addition, all other prerequisites must be met.
Physical Therapist:
Proof of degree must be provided upon registration. Two (2) letters of recommendation from equine veterinarians are required to support registration for this course. In addition, all other prerequisites must be met.
Doctor of Chiropractic:
Proof of degree must be provided upon registration. Two (2) letters of recommendation from equine veterinarians are required to support registration for this course. In addition, all other prerequisites must be met.
Doctor of Osteopathy:
Proof of degree must be provided upon registration. Two (2) letters of recommendation from equine veterinarians are required to support registration for this course. In addition, all other prerequisites must be met.
Equine Massage Therapists & Equine Bodyworkers:
Equine massage therapists (sports massage, myofascial release, etc.) or Equinology® Equine Body Worker (EEBW) graduates. Applicants must have completed 80 course hours of veterinary anatomy and physiology (EEBW graduates have already fulfilled this requirement). If not an EEBW, proof of certification from a 300+ hours recognized course (no online certification courses) in massage for equine courses. No students allowed – graduates only. Applicants must have at least 2 full years of work experience after successful completion of a recognized certification program.
Accepted programs include those with onsite tuition (no distance study), case studies and testing after the onsite tuition. Proof of certification(s), degree(s) and/or licenses(s) must be provided. Two (2) letters of recommendation from a veterinarian are required to confirm the applicant’s competency in working with horses. It is understood that some of the courses presented do not allow non-veterinarians to utilize the methods demonstrated due to local professional regulations.
Veterinary Technicians and Physical Therapy Assistants:
Two (2) letters of recommendation are required. One letter of recommendation is required from the employing veterinarian or employing licensed physical therapist. This letter must include a statement describing the participant’s duties as an equine veterinary technician or PT assistant. The second letter of recommendation from an equine veterinarian is required to support registration for this course. In addition, all other prerequisites must be met. Participants must have at least two years of experience and practice after completing their certification, in a professional setting with an equine veterinarian. Participants must verify state or national veterinary regulations to confirm whether the techniques taught in this course can be carried out by non-veterinarians.
Veterinary Medicine Students (in final year of study):
Two (2) letters of recommendation from veterinarians, professors or university faculty are required to support registration for this course. In addition, all other prerequisites must be met.

Dr. Raquel Butler
She is an Equine Muscle Release Therapy (EMRT) practitioner and has completed a Graduate Diploma in Animal Biomechanical Medicine, encompassing chiropractic, osteopathic and rehabilitation techniques. She obtained a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in 2022 and a Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education in 2020.Dr. Butler has studied many therapies including CranioSacral, Masterson, Acupuncture Oriented Energetics and Myofascial Acupuncture, and is currently completing a Graduate Diploma in Animal Acupuncture. She teaches clinics for both horse owners and professionals in equine anatomy, biomechanics, postural development and vetkin taping nationally and internationally and has spent more than 5 years teaching subjects relating to equine disease, injury, rehabilitation, locomotion and exercise physiology in the Bachelor Equine Science program at Charles Sturt University.Dr. Butler has been mentored by Sharon May-Davis in anatomy and biomechanics and has undertaken more than 20 dissections to develop her knowledge of the connections within the horse. As the President of the Animal Biomechanical Professionals Australia (ABPA) and a teacher in the Animal Biomechanical Medicine (ABM) course, she is very passionate about improving the life of the horse and creating expansion for all horse people through her clinics and treatments as well as continuing to build her knowledge and skills.
